Dec 2010 Cold Weather Wild living and Huddling

This winter has seen some of the most significant cold weather in the UK for some time and this has tested most peoples heating systems - soon  the bills will arrive and those with inadequate insulation in their homes will have to pay through the nose.  It has been reported that people who can not afford to heat their homes have been sheltering in the local shopping centres and libraries. .

Seriously though
  • is your home correctly insulated ?
  • Is the heating system efficient and well mantained
  • Is it draughty?
  • Have you got a southerly facing roof that solar panels could be installed upon
  • - if so you could be quids in with the new feed in tariffs  - you get paid for generating electricity whether or not you use it your self !
  •
Are you you using oil fied heating or LPG - perhaps a heat pump would save money and loads of CO2 emissions
  • Are you worried about the carbon footprint of your home?

if so your home benefit from an assessment and energy saving recommendations from a qualified professional

Due to the weather we have been doing less site visits and Air leakage  testing and more office based work as the roads have not been good.

I got out and about the other day and took the following picture in the snow of the local cattle pushing snow away to get grass ( their promary task is to graze the hill flanks to check the scrub and maintain the short chalk grassland. They are well looked after.)  The scene does not look like the usual garden of england pictures of Kent.

The Snow machine at the Dickensian Christmas festival in Rochester was hardly necessary either. The Hot mulled wine from the Strood Rotarians was wonderful. I always associate the Victorians with cold, smog and black satanic mills. I suppose that snow adds contrast almost making  scenes  almost black and white. Still they had lots of children so I suppose that they went to bed early when it was cold and did exercises under the blankets. Apparently my great Aunt -  if cold -  used to chuck the rug on the bed and probably the dog too  in order  to keep warm.

There is a lot to be said for huddling as a warming strategy.   Birds and animals do this to keep warm. It is also an olympic sport,  The Scotish make champion Huddlers. Oh to be in Adalaide watching cricket!   30 odd degrees  - knotted hankies and chilled beer.
